Trade Show, Day Two

Posted: 06:19 PM ET, 08/10/09

After several cups of strong coffee and a bracing breakfast, I headed back to the convention center on Monday morning with Gordon Mott, Greg Mottola and Barry Abrams from the magazine. We got out of the cab and headed our separate ways to cover the trade show floor. Read more

Trade Show, Day One

Posted: 11:08 AM ET, 08/10/09

I took the early flight yesterday morning with Gordon Mott to New Orleans, taking off at 7 a.m. from JFK and landing in NOLA at 9. We were able to get to the convention center just after 10, right at the time the show floor opened for the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers show. Read more

Heading to the Trade Show

Posted: 09:53 PM ET, 08/08/09

Tomorrow morning I’m catching an early flight to New Orelans for the IPCPR trade show, or what most people still call it, the RTDA. This is when the cigar industry gathers to show off its newest releases, and retailers go booth-to-booth ready to buy. Read more

The Plot Thickens

Posted: 05:00 PM ET, 08/04/09

The first piece in my master plan is in place.

I have just received a document deeding me a lifetime lease on a square foot plot on the island of Islay.

For those of you who are ill informed: Islay is one of the cardinal whisky-making regions of Scotland (the one that makes all the really smoky Scotch); and my master plan is to one day own a distillery. Read more

The Outer Limits of Beer

Posted: 11:01 AM ET, 07/29/09

Sam Adams came to visit the other day, which is always liberating. Rather, I should say it was Jim Koch, the mastermind behind Samuel Adams and the Boston Brewery. He has such zeal for brewing that it’s always exciting to talk beer with him. Which is what we did…sort of. Read more

Camp Smokes

Posted: 04:43 PM ET, 07/24/09

My buddies and I took our children camping this past weekend. We pulled up to a small island off the Connecticut coast and waded ashore, using a small raft to bring in the kids. We started unloading the gear while the boys and girls began playing, enjoying the water and sand. Read more

Cigar Tastings

Posted: 04:47 PM ET, 07/22/09

Jack Bettridge and I were chatting last week after we both wrapped up the taste test for the September/October issue of Cigar Aficionado. By the way, you guys are gonna love the cover subject….I’ll say no more.

We recalled how our taste tests used to be a lot more difficult. Read more

What I'll Do on My Summer Vacation

Posted: 04:38 PM ET, 07/20/09

My wife wants to vacation in Niagara Falls this summer.

And I don't.

It’s an argument that I won’t win, but it goes something like this:

"But, honey, Niagara Falls is for honeymooners and we're already married with kids. Read more

Rooting for the Cigar Guy

Posted: 03:39 PM ET, 07/16/09

I was at my desk this afternoon when a buddy called. He was watching the British Open. “Jimenez just shot a 64,” he said. “He’s in the lead. And he’s smoking a robusto with a red band on it.”

Miguel Angel Jimenez, Spanish golfer, loves cigars, especially Cubans. Read more

Getting A Head At The Bar

Posted: 02:00 PM ET, 07/13/09

What my wife has been warning me about for years finally happened. I have a skull in my home bar.

No, it's not my own pickled skull or that of some wayward guest whom I beheaded for drinking too much of my Chivas Royal Salute. It's a bottle of vodka. Read more
