Quesadas Roll First Cigar Featuring Their Name

Posted: Wednesday, July 08, 2009

By David Savona

The Quesadas have rolled cigars in the Dominican Republic since 1974, and for the first time in those 35 years they are releasing a brand bearing their family name, the Quesada 35th Anniversary.

"It's totally different—we have never used these tobaccos at Matasa before," said Raquel Quesada, daughter of company owner Manuel Quesada and one of the cigar blenders at the company. The wrapper is grown in Ecuador from Arapiraca seed, which usually is grown in Brazil. The binder is Dominican, and the filler is a mix of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. "There's a touch of Nicaragua; it's all ligero," said Quesada.

Matasa stands for Manufactura de Tabacos S.A., and is the name of the cigar factory owned by the Quesadas in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
